The tragedy of the shooting in the "Annunciation" Catholic School in the city of Minneapolis, America, on the morning of August 27, 2025, during which two students aged 8 and 10 were killed and 17 people, including 14 children and three adults over 80 years old, were injured, cannot be attributed to just one person.
The shooter, Robin Westman, 23, a former student at the school, opened fire through a church window at around 8 a.m. on students attending Mass to start the first week of school, and died at the scene from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Time has detailed various pieces of information about Westman in an article. Westman was identified as a trans woman by the U.S. government. Westman’s mother reportedly filed a lawsuit in 2019 to change Westman’s name from “Robert Paul Westman” to “Robin M. Westman.” According to the court document, Westman, who was a minor at the time, “identifies as a female and wants her name to reflect that identification.”
The video and the translation of the notebooks show that Westman had a complex gender identity, writing, “I don’t want to dress girly all the time, but I guess sometimes I really like it. I know I am not a woman, but I definitely don't feel like a man.”
